Master Thesis: Diamond Hetero-Integration in Quantum Technologies

Background

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.de) currently operates 76 institutes and research facilities in Germany and is the world's leading organization for application-oriented research. Around 32 00 employees work on the annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutions in the fields of III/V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic and quantum technological components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, health, energy, information and communication.

In the field of quantum technology, the institute is working on realizing a quantum computer based on color centres in diamond. We use nitrogen vacancy (NV) centres in diamond to generate qubits. Using microwave CBD, we generate NV centres by doping with nitrogen during the diamond growth and characterize them on site with regard to their spin properties using the existing measurement setups.

As part of the master's thesis, the transfer of microemeter-sized diamond structures doped with NV centers will be developed in order to optically integrate them at the chip level. The aim is an optical connection to initialize and read out the spin state of NV centers in diamond on heterogeneous substrates.

What you will do

  • Your tasks include the development and operation of a laboratory setup for the transfer of diamond structures from the substrate to quantum chips.
  • You will mount diamond structures on optical fibers for site-selective excitation of NV centers in diamond.
  • You will conduct photoluminescence experiments on the confocal microscope.
  • The documentation and preparation of measurement results will also be part of your work.
