Thermal data from space: German Space Agency funds the University of Freiburg and New Space Companies

POSTER

The German Space Agency of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) funds the University of Freiburg with subsidies from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action for the project POSTER starting from 1st March 2024. POSTER comprises of an analysis regarding the potential of satellite-derived surface temperature data and an in-depth examination of its application to the topic of urban heat islands. To do so, the University of Freiburg acquires new high-quality thermal data from the German New Space companies, OroraTech and constellr. Researchers from the Chair for Resilience Engineering will analyze the spatial and temporal high-resolution infrared-based satellite data and combine it with additional data sources. The analysis will focus on the potential of the data for monitoring urban heat islands. In the context of current heat records, the need of thermal data measured from space gets increasingly important.

Through a customer contract between the German Space Agency and OroraTech and constellr, the two companies will make the high-resolution satellite-based thermal data available to the German research and development community. By building up the know-how in using the data, the German Space Agency supports the German earth observation community.
